Creating an Editorial Magazine

For this project I have created a short magazine that signifies and portrays the skate scene, this is not just a skateboard based magazine, it hones more into the fashion and streetwear side of things more than action shots of skateboarding. I have aimed to have some action shot images of friends and family skateboarding, but what I’m really interested in is collating and collecting a range of portraits and people photographs, specifying in the clothing and the skate lifestyle. This type of magazine in the real world/industry would typically be found in clothing and skate-shops advertising clothing, as well as what the clothing is supposedly made for (skateboarding). Magazines like this could be found as a magazine made for a specific brand, for example I have seen Carhartt Work in Progress magazines, with heavy imagery and articles advertising their merchandise. On the other hand, similar style magazines can be found to advertise more than one brand of clothing, I know that the clothing stores, Routeone and Twoseasons have had magazines handed out in their stores before. Routeone, Twoseasons and Carhartt all advertise and sell similar clothing to the clothing that I am trying to base my own magazine about. The target audience for this magazine will be people, who may tend to be younger (teens and 20s) but no age specifically, that shop at these sorts of clothing stores all wear similar clothing to the clothes that I shoot people wearing. As well as this it can be based at people who don’t even like the clothes that I'm advertising/portraying but they have an interest in skateboarding, as part of my magazine includes a detailed article of the history and fads that have came and gone over the years in the skateboard scene.

The professional skills I have used whilst creating this magazine is organising and finding my time well enough to organise shoots and meet up with models to do so when we all have free time, organising this around having a week off of college and project time was difficult, but was simple - I needed to make sure I had covered a sustainable amount before leaving to go away without falling behind. A large part of what created my professional magazine outcome is a heavy load of research and planning beforehand, picking apart and critically analysing existing magazines and photographs.
The technical skills involved with the editorial project, included putting my recently learnt knowledge of the InDesign software to the test and creating a magazine from scratch. I had to know what layouts are effective for my style of magazine and know exactly how to create them on the InDesign program.
